Wedding Ceremony Music: A Primer
Wedding ceremony music tends to be softer, usually classical wedding music or ballads. The first step is to decide what "style" or genre you wish to use for your wedding. Classical, Contemporary or Sacred (religious). Will you be having "live" or recorded music? Will there be a vocalist? Once you've made these decisions, it will be time to select specific songs. If you elect to utilize live musicians or vocalists, consult with them before making any decisions on your music to make sure the songs are in their repertoire.
The "Prelude" should include 4-5 songs played when the guests arrive and are seated, then an additional special song can be played when the mothers of the bride and groom are seated. Songs from the prelude list can be used here if you desire.
The "Processional' generally consists of two songs, one when the bridesmaids enter, and the other as the bride walks up the aisle.
The "Interlude" includes special songs at different points in the ceremony, such as after exchanging the rings and vows, lighting of the unity candle, or taking communion.
The most joyous music is the "Recessional", when the bride and groom leave together as a married couple.
"Postlude" music is played as your guests are exiting the ceremony site.
Note that certain churches may have restrictions about "secular" (non-religious) songs used during your ceremony so be sure to ask your clergy person or officiate.
If using recorded music, there are countless versions of the Classical selections available so make sure that you have determined which specific version you prefer. When searching for contemporary ceremony music, a couple of our favorite artists include The O'Neill Brothers and T. Carter. Popular music titles can also be used. Use your imagination and make your wedding uniquely yours!
